About The Book: The Secret Garden

I've just finished reading The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett. And I just wanted to tell everyone the sense when I read this book. So, in between the pages, I smiled, thrilled, and excited. The book is very enchanting. It can bring the readers to the feeling that Marry Lennox felt. Or the excitement of Colin Craven about the outside world he never saw. Or the warmth that Dickon Sowerby felt when he interacted with the nature. And most importantly, this book would make you want to grow your own garden!

Anyway, I am not going to talk about the process of planting plants or growing a garden. I am going to talk about the characters of Mary, Colin, and Dickon and how they relate to each other. In the book, it is explained that Mary is a stubborn and sour little girl. She is so spoiled because she is always served by servants. Meanwhile, her parents do not really care about her existence. After their parents' death, Mary is brought to his uncle's house. Little does she know that her characters will be much improved once she gets there. There he meets Colin, her cousin, and Dickon, the brother of one of the nurses there, Martha Sowerby. Colin and Dickon are two little boys but they each have very different characters. Colin is like Mary, he is so spoiled, he likes to throw tantrums, and he acts like a Rajah who gives order to everyone. While Dickon is a very understanding young lad. He is calm and caring. He is just a simple happy boy. Mary likes to befriend these two boys. With Colin, she can scold him whenever he throws tantrum. It's like she finds her own mirror in Colin. They get upset to each other. They don't hesitate to present their own ego. While with Dickon, Mary is fond of him. She likes him the first time she meets him. Here's a piece of conversation with her and Martha about Dickon:

“I've seen Dickon!” said Mary. “I've seen Dickon!”
“I knew he'd come,” said Martha exultantly. “How does tha' like him?”
“I think—I think he's beautiful!” said Mary in a determined voice.
Martha looked rather taken aback but she looked pleased, too.

“Well,” she said, “he's th' best lad as ever was born, but us never thought he was handsome. His nose turns up too much.”
“I like it to turn up,” said Mary.
“An' his eyes is so round,” said Martha, a trifle doubtful. “Though they're a nice color.” “I like them round,” said Mary. “And they are exactly the color of the sky over the moor.”
Martha beamed with satisfaction.

“Mother says he made 'em that color with always lookin' up at th' birds an' th' clouds. But he has got a big mouth, hasn't he, now?”
“I love his big mouth,” said Mary obstinately. “I wish mine were just like it.”
Martha chuckled delightedly.

Mary feels an instant feeling of comfort the first time she meets Dickon.

This piece of story really got me thinking about the relationship between man and woman in general. I am gonna relate this to my own story. I always like the typical boy like Colin. It gives me thrill to be with a boy like him. It's a challenge to conquer his ego. But at the same time it's very exhausting. I have to put up with him and sometimes he ignores me. And I get upset, and he gets upset too. It's a never ending cycle. And then one day I was given a chance to meet a man like Dickon. And I felt the sudden comfort and happiness like Mary had with Dickon. You know he won't let you down because he isvery nice. You know that he will put you on a pedestal. Someone who doesn't give mixed signals. Someone who is a real gentleman.

Perhaps the more mature you are the more you expect a man like Dickon. I don't judge that the man like Colin is bad. But he is simply immature. He still doesn't know how to treat women, in a nice way.

I am not actually trying to ruin the story and the characters. I just try to see the story from a different perspective.

Overall, I must say this is a very good book, especially about children and parenting. Must read one!

Be Yourself, Eveyone Else Is Taken

Be yourself, sounds cliche I know.

But I remembered something my friend, Sinta, said to me, which inspired me to write this article. She said to me years ago when I lost my phone, "Vita, you should buy new smart phone, because Vita without social media is not Vita".

And then I remembered that I was very active in social media. I was all over the place. Social media is really a place to vent for me. I have thousands of ideas, racing thoughts in my mind that sometimes need to be taken out. Otherwise, I am gonna be crazy (or already I am #sigh).

There were moments when I suppressed my urge not to vent in social medias, whether it's in facebook or path. It made me so stressful. And I had to admit that there were moments when I shut myself down from all social medias. It was because I was depressed due to some reasons I couldn't elaborate more. Just call it midlife crisis (confession, huh?). I know some people can keep their thoughts for themselves. But it drives me insane when I don't. I am a type of person who is better to share my thoughts in writing than in conversation. Sometimes when I have a conversation with someone I am not as all out as I am when texting or chatting. May be because in texting you don't see the person directly. You don't look at their eyes and gesture. You don't feel shy. The perks of being an introvert, I know right.

The other thing about me is that I am quite opinionated and straightforward. So when I like something I will say it and if I don't I will show it too. Sometimes I am quite expressive about this trait. When I like someone I can't help myself smiling, giggling, and telling all the good things about that person to everyone I know. My mom used to be the victim of my story about my crush, boys, friends I like. And when I am upset toward someone, I usually don't say anything. I just keep silent until it melts down at some point. That's the bad side of me. I don't like to communicate when I am upset. Sometimes it creates troubles and conflicts for the people around me. And sometimes my opinionated trait offends people who are highly sensitive. I don't realize that I am just joking but it turns out the other person takes it seriously. This is something I need to be more mindful of. My sense of humor is oftenly going too far.

Nevertheless, I am happy that I can be honest with myself. I am happy that I can be open with my strengths and shortcomings.

That's what we need to do. BE GENUINE. Just don't try to be someone you are not for the sake of "image". You want people to think that you are cool, that you are smart. You try hard to be someone you are not. For me it is sad. You're not being genuine with yourself and with people around you. I like to see people with various emotion. When they're happy they're genuinely happy. When they're angry they don't hesitate to show that. Nothing to hide and nothing to lie about. Don't be afraid to speak out your mind. The Fabulous Philippines

At first, my reason to go to Philippines was only to go to Boracay. When I searched for the ticket of Cebu Pacific Airlines we saw the promo price around Rp. 2,200,000 (around USD 220) from Jakarta to Manila. But unluckily we could not get cheap tickets to Boracay. The cost to Boracay was almost the same with the cost from Jakarta to Manila. We could go there by sea to Boracay too but it would take 12 hours ship journey. We did not have that much time.

We then decided to just explore Manila and its surroundings. I went to Philippines with two of my best friends. I also contacted my friend in Manila, Ian, who was very kindly became our guide for two days :)

We stayed in Makati area, the business district of Manila. Makati is the metropolitan city of Manila. You could see all the skyscrappers. And also you can see many malls too. In such a small area there are large numbers of malls. The famous malls there, are Ayala Malls, Greenbelt (1-5), Glorietta (1-5), The Landmark, and many more. Don’t be surprised because indeed each mall has five chains! I can estimate that the malls in Makati itself are the same numbers with the ones in Jakarta. I mean all parts of Jakarta. One more interesting fact is that Makati city bans the use of plastic bag. So, you won't find any plastic bag used whenever you shop there. I wish that we could implement such regulation as well in Jakarta. It's very environment-friendly.

Our first day in Makati was spent to figure out the buss route and train route. We were so confused with the jeepney route. And because we could not find the jeepney back to our hotel, we ended up walking around 5 kilometers from the center of Makati to our hotel. Crazy! But Makati is quite a small area. You can just walk around it in a day if you want (we didn’t want it but we had to).

The second day, we visited some of the attractions there, such as Ayala Museum, Marikina Shoe Museum, and Intramuros. At Ayala Museum, we were so amazed with oh-so modern architecture. You had to start the journey from the 4th floor. There you would be shown a documentary video about the spreads of gold in Philippines islands. We also could see the collections of some very precious gold dated back from few centuries ago. We were not allowed to take pictures on the fourth and third floor. We were imagining how if we planned to steal some of the golds there and then ran away and built our own empire somewhere. It’s just in our imagination, please Mr. Interpol don’t be suspicious on us :p The second floor was the diorama of the history of Philippines. It explained a lot about the first occupation of Chinese, Spanish, and American. I could say there were a lot of wars in the past history of Philippines, similar to our history too. It shows how barbaric people are in the past, and how grateful (or ungrateful) we live in today’s world.

The next visit was to Marikina Shoe Museum. It was quite far from Makati area. Unfortunately, it was closed. We were very disappointed because we were very curious to see the shoes collection of Imelda Marcos. Finally, we headed to Intramuros. Intramuros is like a giant fort in the center of Manila city. The buildings were so strongly built. And around the area there are churches, hotels, and also government offices as well. We toured around the Intramuros area by tricycle. The driver was very enthusiastic in explaining the history of each building. The cost for the tour for three hours was around 500 PHP (approximately USD 15). Places to see in Intramuros are Fort Santiago, Manila Cathedral, San Agustin Church, Casa Manila, Rizal Park (unfortunately it was closed already when we got there), and Palacio De Governador. I loved to see how old buildings were very well-kept there. It was very romantic to walk around the old buildings especially during the dusk. The most beautiful area is at the park in front of Manila Cathedral. The dim lightings and the quiet environment, and we heard the wedding bells too and my mind wandered. Wake up, Vita!

The third day we visited another province, which was Tagaytay. It took around 2 hours trip by bus from EDSA station. I experienced two train tragedies in Manila. The first one my ticket was lost. The second one my ticket was stuck inside the train barrier, but it wouldn’t open. So I had to go to the ticket officer, wrote my full name there and he allowed me out. Things like this sometimes happened in life....

Tagaytay is like Bogor version of Jakarta. It’s in mountainous area so the weather is rather chill. We went to the Sky Ranch. Sky Ranch is an amusement center of Tagaytay and from this place we can see the beautiful Taal Lake and mount from afar. It is said that Taal mount is the smallest mount in the world. Too bad we didn’t get the chance to trek down Taal crater. Again not much time. So, all we did was sightseeing. We got on the ferris wheels and tried the Viking. In Dunia Fantasi, Jakarta, it’s called Kora-Kora. It was fun and depressing at the same time!

The best thing about this trip was because I got the chance to meet some new friends from Philippines. In my previous travel abroad, I didn’t have anyone to meet in the destination country. So, it’s just like I am the stranger, visiting a strange country. However, it’s a new experience when you have friends, who are locals. You learn a lot about the Filipinos. Like the fact why every Philippines’ girl brings umbrella everywhere, because they don’t like the heat. You won’t see girls in Indonesia wear umbrella during the day, except on a rainy day. But there, umbrella is a must. Umbrella sellers must be happy living in Philippines.

On the last day we didn’t explore much we just hung out at malls and did shopping. I loved shopping at The Landmark. There a lot of cute stuffs there. I bought a glittery purse with the FABULOUS writing on it. It was my love at first sight and whenever I looked at it I could just yell fabulous! Just like The Philippines. PHILIPPINES IS FABULOUS!

Road Trip East Java - Bali

I had this crazy idea in my mind to have a road trip in East Java. East Java has always fascinated me. When I visited Mount Bromo and Malang, I already fell in love with East Java. With the nature, the food, the environment. Some people can never get enough of Jogjakarta. I can never get enough of Surabaya.

So then, I contacted few of my friends if they wanted to help me to make my dream come true. I first contacted my friend in Surabaya, Wina of course. Then I contacted my friends in Jakarta. So after few months of discussion, there were finally six people joined in the trip. Four people from Jakarta, and two from Surabaya.

I made the itinerary for the trip. I have always been the master of itinerary whenever I and my friends travel. The plans were changed several times, till finally we got the fixed plans. First we would be heading to Situbondo area. There we would visit Baluran National Park. After that we would trek up to Ijen Crater, and then we would cross to Menjangan Island in Bali. Originally, we would visit Green Bay and Red Island as well, but we could not make it, because we had no much time.

So, there we were six people spending time in a car for 4 days. With repeated Taylor Swift songs and Arianna Grande’s, with the repeated stops in petrol station and Alfamart to fuel our tank and our stomach. And with the continuous “galauness” of each member. Well, we’re all singletons, no wonder.

Our first visit to Baluran National Park was quite disappointing. It rained at that time. So, we could not see the view of Mount Baluran very clearly. And we could not go to Bima beach as well, because the guide said it was too risky to go there during rainy day. From the gate of the national park, it took around half an hour to savannah, as the main attraction. The road was stony, muddy, and bumpy. Hopefully it can be improved by the government later. There were no deers sighted because it was rainy. So, we just took few pictures there and went back. We were not quite satisfied but well, at least we had been here.

Then we headed to Ijen Crater, it was around 3 hours from the Baluran National Park. We arrived at night around 10.00 PM. We were surprised that there were no inn or hostel there. We thought that Ijen area was like Bromo area, full of housings, and inns. The nearest inn was about 15 – 20 kilometer from the trekking post. Luckily we could rent a tent there. So some of us slept there. The hike was at 2.00 AM in the morning to witness the sunrise. There were only three of us who finally went to top. Three others were too exhausted to hike. The trek to the Ijen crater was not too extreme. However, there were some parts which were very steep. And we had to be careful because if we weren’t, we could fall into the chasm. Along with us there were several foreigners and many locals. I was very impressed with one of the Korean tourists. He was old, perhaps around 70 years old but he was very spiritful to trek up. Eventhough he had to stop and to catch his breath very oftenly. The hike took about two hours and finally we arrived around 4 AM at the top of Ijen crater. It was still dark and we waited for the sunrise. We saw the changing colors of the crater during the sunrise. It was because of the effects of sun. It was originally dark, then grey, till it turned into tosca green, the sulfur color. Some of the trekkers went downstairs to see the Blue Fire. It costed around Rp. 100,000 for guide tips. We decided not to go downstairs. The view of Ijen Crater is amazing. It’s so picturesque like Mount Bromo view. I couldn’t help feeling very excited. This was my first quite serious mount trekking. And I made it! Of course after months of preparation by routinely doing cardio and strength training :D

What I noticed was that when you hike your adrenaline level is increasing. The effect is you won’t be feeling exhausted or weary when after the hike. The pain and soreness can only be felt two or three days after. Interesting!

The last trip was to Menjangan Island in Bali. We went to Ketapang jetty to cross to Gilimanuk jetty, Bali. Menjangan Island is located near Gilimanuk jetty. It is in West Bali and it is still very far from Central Bali like Kuta and Legian. We first looked for a guest house and stayed the night. The next day we went to Menjangan Island. The tour trip along with snorkeling equipments rent, boat rent, and guide tips was approximately Rp. 1,200,000 (approx USD 120) for six people. It will be quite cheap if you are in a large group because the cost can be shared. The boat journey was only around 15 minutes. We had two snorkeling spots. They were all breath-taking. From my experience in snorkeling, this was the best snorkeling spot I ever visited. Too bad I didn’t bring the underwater camera case at that time.

On the same day, we went back to Surabaya again. Long long journey. It took around 8 hours from Bali to Surabaya. The next day we had culinary trip to Madura, the famous Bebek Sinjay. I didn’t eat duck meat of course, but my friends did.

Overall, I really enjoyed the trip. That summed up as the best trip at the end of 2014 and in the beginning of 2015. The trip was on December 31, 2014 up to January 4, 2015. What a great way to end and start the year, with great companions, to some great places.

Traveling is not all about where you go,
but it is also about with whom you go (Veetha)
